Cobalt accelerator, also known as cobalt octoate or cobalt naphthenate, is a commonly used accelerator in the curing of polyester and vinyl ester resins in composite manufacturing. It is a cobalt-based compound that is added to the resin to increase the rate of curing and reduce the time required for the resin to harden.
When cobalt accelerator is added to a resin, it reacts with the peroxide catalyst (such as MEKP) to form free radicals, which initiate the curing process. This reaction can occur at lower temperatures than without the accelerator, which can be useful in certain manufacturing processes.
Cobalt accelerator is typically added in small amounts, ranging from 0.5 to 3.0% by weight, depending on the specific resin formulation and curing requirements. It is important to use the correct amount of accelerator, as too much can cause the resin to cure too quickly and result in excessive heat generation, warping or cracking.
Like other catalysts and accelerators, cobalt accelerator should be handled with care and appropriate personal protective equipment should be worn. It is also important to store and handle cobalt accelerator in a well-ventilated area, away from sources of heat or flame, to reduce the risk of fire or explosion.
